About this deal

As a Rule of Thumb I would suggest that 1 litre of K1 media should be allowed for every 4g. of fish food.

Will K1 mixed in with K1 micro be an issue or vice versa I wonder. As without seeing the two side by side and comparing with mine Im not sure how Ill tell which Ive got.I've not used K1 Micro just K1 and the problem with mixing the 2 could be that eventually you could start loosing the K1 Micro through the grill in the Eazy Pod unless it's designed for K1 Micro. Not sure if the sleeve that holds the media away from the centre pipe is different in the newer Eazy Pods to allow for the K1 Micro or not? K1 media is a light, small, wheel shaped plastic media that floats easily. It is used in pond filters to trap suspended solids and also to promote the growth of beneficial bacteria. These micro-organisms convert toxic ammonia produced by the fish into less toxic nitrate, and ultimately nitrate, through the nitrification process. A key feature of this media is that it has a fantastic protected surface area which greatly aids the development of these bacteria. It allows bacteria to colonise within the filter and, at the same time, prevents the unnecessary loss of bacteria through excessive water movements.Scooping the media out could be another right pain couldnt it. And if I then put it into water Im not going to be able to measure the volume Ive taken out. K3 seems to be difficult to come by although the link above seems to show some. K1 micro and K3 seems much more expensive than K1 and that varies in price enormously. There are also some "K3 like" plastic medias out there, Oase do one. My answer to your question would be - why do you want to know?

Kaldnes Moving Bed process, which has been scientifically tried and tested in fish farming and waste water treatment for over 10 years, is now available for fish keepers and is exclusively distributed worldwide by Evolution Aqua. The media is engineered in a wheel shape and is slightly positively buoyant. This allows a small amount of water flow to circulate the media throughout the vessel. This flow is created with your air pump and air stones or diffuser etc. Unlike foam, matting, or other forms of static filtration media, the K1 micro media is designed to move freely within your filter. The constant chaotic movement of the air from your pump, causes the media to self clean and thus requires no maintenance. This allows the filter to reach optimum effectiveness without the disturbance of periodic cleaning, avoiding unnecessary loss of bacteria within the filter. 50 Litres of K1 micro media will handle up to 450 gramms (0.45kg) of food per day (when mature). How it is different to other media : As the Kaldnes media moves within the filter, it causes the old dead bacteria on the outside to be displaced. This makes space for new younger heavier feeding bacteria to rapidly colonise. Within the wheel is a protected surface which enables colonies of bacteria to naturally follow their lifecycle, of maturing, dying and then fueling the latter stages of the nitrification cycle. Kaldnes has been designed to provide the best possible habitat for both young and mature beneficial bacterial colonies. I really think EA is onto something here. It’s certainly got me inspired — not bad for a tiny piece of white plastic! Biological and mechanical filtration are essential for the effective treatment of water. It is important to know that biological filtration should be combined with mechanical filtration for the most effective results. Combined mechanical and biological filtration are the bare minimum requirements for effective water treatment. However, the use of both types of media is highly recommended for any home water purification system. If you are thinking about purchasing a K1 filter for your home, it is important to choose a model that provides a full range of filtration. If i had the free choice, i would recommend a combination of japan mats, static plastic stuff and by bypass, a bakki shower. With a new shape and profile, K+ Filter Media has also been designed to have an increased and class leading surface area, meaning an overall surface area of 1,350m2 per m3. More importantly for biological filtration, the protected surface area of K+ Media is 1,025m2 per m3. This allows a stable bio-film to form and remain intact when used in moving bed biological filtration, as in the new Nexus+. The beauty of K1 media lies with its ability to be easily cleaned and resistant to clogging. Due to its neutral buoyancy a small amount of air injected into a filter will cause the bed to move, thus separating the excess solids from the media surface area. The solids can then be run to waste. In this way the effective surface area remains as high as possible. Alternative Filter Media I think I have K1 Micro, came with the Pod when I bought it 10 years ago. Its about diameter of a 5p maybe smaller.Sounds reasonably big although it's in reality about 25 litres max possibly?

What is K1 media?

The beauty of Bakki Shower is, that it does de-nitrification really well too - in addition to all it's other benefits (stripping off CO2, reducing DOC etc.) - so who is running Bakki shower - with BHM or Ogata Crystal Bio media inside - is getting very good de-nitrification setup already. Nevertheless a crucial step in pond design is to correctly size the pond filter. Too large takes up valuable space and is expensive. Too small will almost certainly lead to poor water quality and a decline in the health of the fish. Very often manufacturers size their filters according to the size of the pond. This does not make any sense and will certainly lead to disappointment. In the centre of the wheel is a protected surface that allows the growth of a secure biofilm that is able to resist collisions when operated as a moving bed. Why is it important? K1 Micro is an alternative to traditional bead media. Its unique size is ideal for pond filters and fluidised-moving static bed systems. It offers a large active surface area for bacteria to colonise and remove ammonia and nitrite from the water. Then, you’ll have the peace of mind that bacteria are thriving and removing the harmful compounds in the water. Unlike traditional filters, bio filter media has an improved surface area, which attracts more nitrifying bacteria. This means that your tank will be cleaner, and you won’t have to worry about dangerous spikes in ammonia and nitrate. It is important to clean this product thoroughly before using it, since it can contain dust and shells from different materials.
