About this deal

I pulled it out and it broke in two, cable is identical to that found on a bicycle so no surprise it will rust if exposed to water and the elements. I gave it a good soak in my degreasing tank cleaned it up thoroughly till everything was moving freely as it should.

Then went through the open/close process (wihtout actually closing the bonnet) many times (approx 20). I was able to simulate the locked position by pushing a screw driver down the back of the clip and moving it to the locked position. The site and services are provided "as is" with no warranty or representations by JustAnswer regarding the qualifications of Experts. You will reveal two torx25 screws, remove these and then you'll be able to lever the bonnet enough to get at the third torx screw which is slightly to the left and hidden by the grille. Only quirk is the electrical cable is much longer than the original, so you'll need to find somewhere to put it all, or cable-tie it up.

The two T20 screws here and remove them from the car {yellow}, these are the screws just next to the headlights in this picture and then once they are removed from the car squeeze in the two plastic clips {red} can do one at a time and then remove the grill from the car. The mechanism was reasonably dirt and rust free for 7yo but I did find that the secondary latch "fish hook" wouldn't latch due to partial seizure of the pivots to this and the release lever shafts. You need to first remove the two holding the lock in place, these are located directly behind the VW badge. Incidentally there is not an "emergency release tab" what I found as a plastic tab in that location is part of the lock mechanism and I think is meant to stop any chance of the alarm and operating cable drooping down into view.

Disconnect bonnet release cable, I pulled it off the metal clips this gave me enough room, but I suspect the cable may be a bit stretched. Unscrew the three T30 torx bolts holding the bonnet latch mechanism in place noting each bolt's position.
